National strategy for the deployment of counting gates on Quebec salmon rivers

Recipient: Fédération québécoise pour le saumon atlantique
Approved Amount: $50,000
Year Approved: 2024

Description: The project will support the installation of counting fences to monitor upriver runs on targeted priority rivers and financially support salmon counting. The second generation automatic IchtyoS meter developed by the WSP firm is an efficient tool to count the number of salmons entering the river in summer, therefore the number of spawners which will spawn in the fall. The upriver runs data is essential for the river-to-river management completed by the government of Québec. MELCCFP has been using that salmon upriver runs monitoring technology since 2017 on several rivers in Québec. It is a long-term project with the 2016-2026 Atlantic salmon management plan of Québec. FQSA works closely with the river managers and MELCCFP in this major national project.
