Literature review on the cohabitation of recreational activities on salmon rivers and the carrying capacity of the environment
Description: Since 2020, the pandemic and the exceptional traffic in the Gaspé region and elsewhere in Québec led to questions on recreational uses of salmon rivers and their impact. Since then, the increased popularity of aquatic sports and the greater interest of Quebecers for their territory increased the number of boaters on salmon rivers dramatically, particularly in the Gaspé region. A large inrush of tourists and the increased numbers of canoes, kayaks and all sorts of inflatable objects on the rivers led to numerous conflicts among users. An increased interest for recreational fishing was also observed. In spite of the numerous debates on the harmonization of the various uses, very little discussion focussed on the main party, Atlantic salmon, and on the support capacity of its habitat. Little data exists about the impact of mass recreational activities on Atlantic salmon. However, some studies can be similar. After MELCCFP’s and the scientific committee’s recommendation, the first stage of our work will be a complete review of the literature. In a second phase, a detailed research protocol will be developed to help us determine to what extent intensive recreational activities can have an impact on Atlantic salmon and its habitats.
