Casting & Conservation: Introducing Atlantic Salmon conservation and fly fishing to the youth in western & eastern Newfoundland

Recipient: Salmonid Preservation Association for Watersheds of Newfoundland
Approved Amount: $15,000
Year Approved: 2023

SPAWN will visit 3 elected schools in Curling NL, Pasadena NL, and Stephenville NL, to teach conservation, fly casting, fish handling, knots, and river-based stewardship. The program will be designed to introduce youth to Atlantic salmon, the importance of conservation, habitat, threats to species, and the role that youth can play in the survival of Atlantic salmon. SPAWN will visit St. John’s and offer 2 days of lessons to youth in that area as there were numerous requests to do so in 2022. We will teach several fly-tying classes to youth at drop-in classes in the Corner Brook area.
