Atlantic salmon habitat restoration and enhancement, phase 3
HRA and Pisquid River Enhancement Project in conjunction with the Watershed Alliance Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP) will continue implementing recommendations from the Conservation Strategy for Atlantic Salmon on PEI. They will: maintain beaver-free zones on Pisquid and Clark’s; consult with landowners regarding expanding beaver-free zones; rake 100m2 to expose cobble; remove log jams to maintain fish access; continue temperature and nitrate monitoring; continue salmon redd surveys and electrofishing; and mentor and educate student employees, elementary school students (COVID-dependent) and landowners.
4 natural log flow deflectors (i.e., pincher logs) will be installed to create 4 new holding pools; 100 meters of brush mats, 12 floating log cover structures and at least 10 shale cover structures will be installed; 175 native trees and shrubs will be planted and maintained to enrich diversity and create stream shade. The annual Hillsborough Tidings newsletter will be published and an Atlantic salmon management plan for Vernon River will be created.
