Foundation for Conservation of Atlantic Salmon Releases Landmark Report Following Historic Symposium on Wild Salmon Conservation
Fredericton, New Brunswick – February 10, 2025 – The Foundation for Conservation of Atlantic Salmon (FCAS) is proud to announce the launch of the report summarizing the proceedings of the recently held Inter-Provincial Partnership Atlantic Salmon Symposium in Moncton, NB on October 24-25, 2024. This unprecedented gathering brought together conservation groups, Indigenous organizations, academia and government representatives from five provinces, marking a pivotal moment in the collective effort to revitalize the conservation of wild Atlantic salmon, an iconic species whose survival is increasingly at risk.
For the first time in decades, stakeholders convened to discuss the current challenges facing wild Atlantic salmon populations and to explore collaborative strategies for effective conservation. The symposium highlighted the urgent need for immediate and concerted action across jurisdictions to address the alarming decline of this vital fish species.
“The symposium participants delved into current challenges facing wild Atlantic salmon, shared successful case studies and traded innovative ideas, while providing valuable feedback in support of a comprehensive action plan for future conservation efforts,” said Charline McCoy, Executive Director of FCAS. “It is safe to say that this long overdue interprovincial gathering of wild Atlantic salmon interests was a success because it laid the groundwork for improved collaboration and partnership among interested organizations. The FCAS is proud to have supported and hosted this vital conversation on the future of wild Atlantic salmon.”
The report, summarising what we heard at the symposium, serves as a crucial resource for stakeholders, providing a clear outline of the discussions and insights shared during the symposium. It is designed to encourage further collaboration and inspire concerted conservation action across the region, ensuring that the voices of all involved are heard in the ongoing fight to protect wild Atlantic salmon. The report is available on the FCAS website under News and Reports, www.salmonconservation.ca/news-reports/#symposium_reports.
