September Newsletter 2017
September 7, 2017We’re now into the Fall stretch of our recipient’s 2017 field season. It’s hard to believe but summer is nearly over and that the end of streamside activities is in sight. Personally, the autumn is my favourite time of year. That’s because I prefer cooler and more colourful fall fishing as compared to fishing in the summer months.
This time of the year also portends the 2018 round of funding proposals that close on 15 November. This is a new closure date intended to better enable groups with seasonal staff to be able to prepare submissions during their employment period. It will also support a smoother preparation for the review of funding proposals by our expert advisory committees.
This month we express our great appreciation to the management and staff of NB Liquor for their long-term support of rivers conservation in New Brunswick. One hundred percent of funds raised by the “Protect Our Rivers” sales event go directly to community groups in the province. The sale runs through to Sunday, 24 September in all NB Liquor stores with the final weekend (21-24 September) featuring a prompt at cash that earned over $20,000 last year.
We are also recognizing the exceptional conservation work of the Shediac Bay Watershed Association (SBWA). The SWBA has undertaken stream assessments in several area rivers to identify salmon spawning habitat, pollution sources, erosion causing sedimentation, blockages and problematic culverts causing habitat fragmentations and fish passage issues. We are proud to know the funding support provided to the SWBA is being so wisely used to help salmon conservation in southeast New Brunswick.
Yours in conservation,
Stephen Chase,
Executive Director
