Restoring of Porters Brook and post-removal monitoring

Recipient: The Nashwaak Watershed Association Inc.
Approved Amount: $16,000
Year Approved: 2024

Description: Porters Brook is an important cold-water, spring-fed brook that lies within the Nashwaak watershed. Deposition of sediment is occurring in the pool at the mouth of the brook when water velocity slows. If the existing culvert pipe and road were to collapse or washout, it would send road fill and sediment into the watercourse, which would irreversibly damage the brook as well as the important cold-water pool at the mouth. The project will occur in multiple stages, with the first stage including the removal of the culvert and excavation of the existing embankment. The second stage of the project will involve the restoration of the valley using a bioengineering “green” approach. This will be implemented post-culvert removal and will be led by the NWAI. Monitoring of the site will include thermal monitoring and surface water quality. This will be conducted between May-October, pre/post-restoration for several years to ensure that the project is continuing to re-establish the natural flow regime as expected. Visual inspection of the site will also occur during these visits.
