Post-Removal monitoring and restoration of Campbell Creek Dam
Description: This project seeks to build on the successful removal of the Campbell creek dam that was completed in 2021. The Campbell creek dam had previously impeded fish passage to a high-quality cold-water tributary for over a century and represented one of the worst barriers in the Nashwaak watershed. By removing the dam and restoring access to Campbell creek, Atlantic salmon have been provided with a net gain of over 32.5 km2 of quality habitat. Unfortunately, the summer of 2023 also saw unprecedented levels of precipitation which battered the riparian planting that had been completed in 2021 & 2022. One storm saw rain amounts of up to 120 mm in 24 hours due a post tropical storm. To slow future riparian erosion, NWAI would like to propose the planting of additional, larger trees and shrubs that are more likely to withstand heavy rainfall and will be more resilient to climate changed induced changes. It is imperative to the future success of the project that the riparian zone provide adequate bank stability and canopy cover to create a more regulated and resilient aquatic habitat for salmonids. Proposed 2024 tasks include: Fill planting of the riparian zone for areas with low survival. This promotes healthy riparian development that will both cool the creek and prevent erosion in the long-term.
