Determination of the genetic structure and natal rivers of Atlantic salmon in Lake Melville (Labrador): Implications for sustainable fisheries management, conservation and food security

Recipient: Nunatsiavut Government
Approved Amount: $30,000
Year Approved: 2014

Atlantic salmon in Lake Melville support an important Food, Social and Ceremonial (FSC) fishery and a better understanding of Lake Melville’s salmon populations is needed for fisheries management, conservation and food security. This project will 1) determine whether salmon in Lake Melville are genetically distinct and should be managed independently, 2) determine whether the fisheries in Lake Melville are exploiting a single stock or represents a mixed stock harvest, 3) identify important rivers contributing to salmon production, 4) create training opportunities for NG beneficiaries, and 5) educate the public about the importance of conservation of wild Atlantic salmon and its habitat.
