Atlantic Salmon Population and Habitat Baseline Watershed Surveys for North Lake Creek and Cross River, Phase 2
Description: The Souris and Area Branch of the PEI Wildlife Federation (SAB) will again in 2024 be conducting considerable monitoring in the genetically distinct, potentially ancestral Atlantic salmon rivers of North Lake Creek and Cross River to compile data and continue to bridge data gaps, based on the Hay River reference watershed monitoring initiatives from 2019 through to 2022. This will be used to provide a better understanding of watershed health and what effects it may have on Atlantic salmon productions and survival in these two larger rivers, which are part of the northeastern cluster of salmon rivers on PEI. Analyzing this data will help to determine correlation between environmental conditions and limiting factors, which will aid in retaining and improving salmon stocks on PEI.
The overall project objective is to develop habitat restoration management plans for these larger PEI Atlantic salmon rivers.
