Atlantic salmon conservation to receive a $300,000 boost again this year

Fredericton, NB – The Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation (ASCF) will open its fourth round of competition for funding on November 1, 2010, Stephen Chase, the Foundation’s Executive Director, announced today. A total of $300,000 will be awarded for projects slated to begin in the spring of 2011.

Restoring and protecting Atlantic salmon stocks involves many initiatives, from the finding out where the salmon are, and in what quantities, to replenishing stock, dealing with invasive predators, repairing or creating suitable habitat and teaching anglers how to fish with conservation in mind. Much of this work is funded by the ASCF, which in the past three years has supported over 60 projects with some $850,000. The 2011 round of grants will bring the total contribution to $1.15 million.

“The goal of the Foundation is to help achieve healthy and sustainable wild Atlantic salmon stocks in Atlantic Canada and Quebec,” says Chase.

“Proposals demonstrating partnership among the eligible groups are very important to the Foundation and will be considered favourably,” he adds.  “Volunteer conservation groups, Aboriginal organizations, municipalities, industrial bodies, and others working at the watershed level are all encouraged to apply. Partnerships among First Nations, Aboriginal groups and community groups are particularly encouraged.”

Some $50,000 in grants will be awarded in each province, while another $50,000 will support interprovincial initiatives. Recognizing that wild Atlantic salmon and habitat conservation issues and needs vary around the region, the Foundation requires that proposed projects address provincial priorities as outlined in the application criteria (available at www.salmonconservation.ca).

The 2011 round of applications opens on Monday, 1 November 2010. Deadline for applications is 17 December 2010 at 5:00 p.m. EST. All proposals must be submitted through the ASCF website (www.salmonconservation.ca). More information is available on the website or by contacting Rosalyn Smedley at roz@salmonconservation.caor 506-455-9900.
